This because criminals are criminals,they don't have the licence of drugs or of extortion. That's one of the many reasons death penalty for drug trafficking is so good. Because you're getting rid of a criminal first and foremost,not much of the drugs by themselves .

In every society a certain % of young men will desire to participate in a violent tournament for dominance. Drugs, whores, dice, extortion...these are all just excuses for the tournament, which is the main point. They will find something to fight over, it's the fight and not the object of the fight that is the driver.
This is all built off the war on drugs and it's failures. Like senator Mitch McConnell making CBD a controlled substance just goes to show the cartels will never lose their bread and butter commodities. The stupidity of politicians breeds cartel power.

1. why cults exist (gangs are just violent cults)
2. why an individual would want to join a cult
